Story
The catastrophic flash floods triggered by a glacier collapse struck along the Nepal - Tibet border in late August 2026 have swept away and destroyed entire communities, though a precise nationwide total of destroyed homes is still being assessed as rescue teams struggle to reach isolated areas.
Impact and Current Status
Human Toll: Approximately 1000 people have been confirmed dead, with about 4,200 still unaccounted for.
Affected Population: More than 90,000 people are estimated to have been directly affected, including thousands of children
Infrastructure Damage:
Entire settlements along river corridors in districts like Bhote Koshi and Trishuli, initially Rasuwa and subsequently downstream Nuwakot and Dhading, towards Chitwan. were heavily impacted with countless houses submerged, buried in the mudslides, or completely washed away.
Relief Operations:
Humanitarian agencies and local authorities are prioritising search-and-rescue, though blocked highways and washed out bridges continue to severely limit access to the hardest hit zones.
ADRA Nepal are on the ground providing shelter kits to families who have lost their homes to the devastating floods. They are working closely with local authorities and other responding agencies to coordinate critical relief efforts for affected families.
